It was an important word for the ancient Greeks, as it had been for many older civilisations. One of man’s first intellectual tasks was to study himself. The Egyptians set up their great “Mystery Schools” in which they gathered together all the great minds of their time to seek out the answers to the mystery of life.
All through history, man has searched for meaning within himself – new ways to expand his intellect, new pathways to knowledge, an “altered” consciousness.
By this, we mean a state of consciousness that is DIFFERENT from the consciousness we are all familiar with in our normal “waking” life. For instance being ASLEEP is a different or “altered” state. So is “sleep-dreaming” and the state of consciousness called “day-dreaming”…during which state we may find our automatic subconscious controls performing normal tasks, while our mind wanders in some other realm. This is not an unusual experience for automobile drivers on long trips, who sometimes have a startling realisation that they have successfully guided their car for miles along a motorway, in traffic, yet have no memory of having done so. Nowhere has this search for the mysteries of life been more intense or met with greater response and success, than in the civilisations of the East.
Yoga, Zen and numerous other Eastern disciplines are well known to us. But, most familiar is TRANSCENDENTAL MEDITATION. In which the participant is given a “matra”- a personal meaningless incantation which through repetition, helps to remove him from the reality of the world about him in order to achieve a state of passive awareness in which he is capable of greater insight and expanded mental ability.
Although it may take years to learn the difficult disciplines of these Oriental mystic rituals, the result is apparently an increase in ALPHA wave activity, and a reduction of BETA waves- a phenomenon referred to by some modern psychologists as the “Alpha State”
This effect can be achieved much more quickly through “bio-feedback” than by meditation. BIO-FEEDBACK is a recent development in the science of the mind, which uses combinations of electroencephalograph machines and computers to measure the brain waves of a subject and signal him with a light or sound when he is producing Alpha waves. With practice, he learns the subjective mental processes that have the effect of increasing the proportion of these waves. Eventually, he may be able to produce them at will.
ALPHANETICS ACHIEVES A SIMILAR RELAXED STATE THROUGH THE USE OF TAPED RELAXATION EXERCISES, THAT ENABLE THE MIND TO “SLOW DOWN” THE FRANTIC ACTIVITY WHICH IS USUALLY ASSOCIATED WITH THE MORE RAPID BETA WAVES.
